Everyday geographies of shadow education: placements, spatialities and temporalities of tutoring provisions

Everyday geographies of shadow education: placements, spatialities and temporalities of tutoring provisions
Everyday geographies of shadow education: placements, spatialities and temporalities of tutoring provisions
This chapter advocates for considering everyday geographies of shadow education, an increasingly popular edu-industry that operates alongside formal schooling. Shadow education refers to privatised outside-school educational services that provide targeted teaching and learning support to help students excel in the formal assessment system. The chapter explores this industry's geographies by examining:(1) the place it occupies, through purposive shadowing;(2) the space it creates, by strategically deviating from; and (3) the way it changes over time, by constantly circumventing the formal schooling practices, albeit in alignment with them. The discussion presented here highlights how shadow education shapes contemporary geographies of education.
