Occlusion
Occlusion
Does precision blind us to what we cannot see? This question is at the heart of Occlusion, an art-science film about the use of LiDAR to map, measure, and monitor forests. The accuracy of LiDAR offers new opportunities to scientists, transporting the forest’s complexity from the world to the computer. But it also creates new opportunities for extraction and exploitation. Weaving together archival material with forest footage and data visualisations, Occlusion situates LiDAR within wider histories of measurement, colonialism, and Western modes of seeing nature. Occlusion is a call to think critically about the convincing power of technical aesthetics.
