What can GP registrars gain from training in a health authority public health department

Since 1999, general practice (GP) registrars on vocational training schemes in Buckinghamshire have been attached part-time to the public health department at the Health Authority for three months. The registrar has a trainer to oversee all their work, a supervisor for specific advice regarding their project work and a mentor for pastoral care. The department has developed a work programme for the attachment designed to maximise the GP registrar's learning in this short period. Evaluation of these placements examined whether the GP registrar was able to address the agreed competencies, whether he/she completed an audit project and tried to identify other unanticipated problems or benefits. Generally, the registrars have enjoyed and benefited from their attachment.
