States of transition: the Chevalière D’Éon and her portrait prints, 1764–1791
It has been assumed that the French diplomat, spy and transwoman the Chevalière D’Éon (1728–1810) was the victim of many prints of her produced during her lifetime in London and Paris. Her diary and personal archive, however, demonstrate that, far from being passive, D’Éon commissioned several of the prints representing her, and used them to assist her transition. They enable us to explore how D’Éon successfully deployed the visual tropes available to her, creating an image of herself as a celebrity, as well as a historical figure
