The impact of student partnership to enhance assessment and feedback practices at the University of Southampton
The impact of student partnership to enhance assessment and feedback practices at the University of Southampton
Students’ views are shifting in how they want to engage in higher education, driven by complex socio-economic landscapes which has prompted universities to re-consider how they support students. Central to this is their experience of assessment and feedback which, across the sector, tends to be marked by variability shaping students’ broader perceptions of their university experience. To address this the University of Southampton has implemented a 5-year strategic project to enhance assessment practice and literacy with a core ethos of student partnership. This includes working in partnership with students to enhance assessment, as well as contributing directly to the CHEP Assessment Consultancy (AC), where Student Interns are recruited to utilise their expertise in the student experience as change agents. The Student Interns' input has provided immense value as part of the AC including building assessment visualisations maps, working to promote surveys, running focus groups, analysis and writing of evaluation reports, supporting student programme panels, co-facilitating CPD workshops and advocating for the student experience across all areas of this work.
This session will outline how this model works and includes reflections from the Student Interns themselves, who will share their experiences and insights on how to ensure that student partnership and voice are embedded effectively.
