Drunktown's Finest (2014)

Drunktown's Finest (2014)
Drunktown's Finest (2014)
Sydney Freeland’s 2014 film Drunktown’s Finest is set in the fictional border town of Dry Lake, on the edge of the Navajo Nation. The film follows three young Diné (Navajo) people as they resolve individual struggles. In the process, they discover that their lives intersect. While Freeland gestures toward some of the trauma that settler-colonial spaces like Dry Lake have inflicted upon and within Diné society, she refuses to accede to the genocidal tropes of Indigenous self-destruction perpetuated in border-town nicknames like “Drunk Town, USA.” Instead, the film offers its protagonists a redemptive, if not quite happy, ending.
