A new display technology using nonlinear wavemixing for smart glasses
A new display technology using nonlinear wavemixing for smart glasses
Near-to-eye displays such as those used in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and smart glasses are poised to become the next mass-consumer display device. Currently, commercially available near-to-eye displays have limited battery-life, brightness and transparency (due to absorption and scattering) that prevents their wide adoption, particularly for outdoor use. We present a new method of generating a near-to-eye display (where an image/video appears to float in front of the viewer) that offers a route towards a high-transparency and high-brightness display that can enable the wide use and adoption of next-generation smart glasses.

Abstract
Near-to-eye displays such as those used in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and smart glasses are poised to become the next mass-consumer display device. Currently, commercially available near-to-eye displays have limited battery-life, brightness and transparency (due to absorption and scattering) that prevents their wide adoption, particularly for outdoor use. We present a new method of generating a near-to-eye display (where an image/video appears to float in front of the viewer) that offers a route towards a high-transparency and high-brightness display that can enable the wide use and adoption of next-generation smart glasses.
