Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Turing Test
Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Turing Test
Alan Turing’s paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence was published 75 years ago in 1950 in the journal Mind. In it, Turing proposed what has become known as the Turing Test, an “imitation game” to explore the concept of machine intelligence.

On 2 October 2025, the Royal Society held an event to mark the 75th anniversary of Turing’s paper in collaboration with the Web Science Institute and with sponsorship from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

At the event we reflected on Turing’s paper, the development of machine intelligence since 1950, and how it is tested, measured and debated. Credit for insights goes to the event speakers listed on page 12.

This position paper draws on those insights to explore how we might talk differently about machine intelligence, and how we might ask for more from it.
