IMO 2023 revised emission reduction strategy and regulatory challenges of maritime decarbonization
IMO 2023 revised emission reduction strategy and regulatory challenges of maritime decarbonization
Considering the urgency of the environmental degradation and climate problem, this article offers an examination of the current state of global regulatory initiatives aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from maritime vessels, as well as potential regulatory challenges associated with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Revised 2023 Strategy and Short-Term Measures intro- duced by MARPOL Annex VI.The international shipping business, being inherently global in nature, necessitates regulatory measures that prioritize stability, certainty, visibility, and ideally, uniformity. The primary focus of the essay is on the efforts made by the international community, particularly the IMO, to address emission reduction goals and mitigate any potential regulatory confusion among maritime stakeholders.
