Guest editorial. Childhood obesity: the 21st century epidemic
Levels of obesity among children in the western world are increasing at an alarming rate. Between 1995 and 2003 obesity rates among children in the UK aged 2–10 years, for example, accelerated from 9.9 to 13.7% (Jotangia et al, 2006). The long-term implications on the nation’s health and the burden it will cause to the NHS in years to come if it is not tackled effectively is already a cause of major concern. The British Medical Association (BMA, 2007), for example, estimate that there are already around 1 million obese children under 16 in England.

Abstract
Levels of obesity among children in the western world are increasing at an alarming rate. Between 1995 and 2003 obesity rates among children in the UK aged 2–10 years, for example, accelerated from 9.9 to 13.7% (Jotangia et al, 2006). The long-term implications on the nation’s health and the burden it will cause to the NHS in years to come if it is not tackled effectively is already a cause of major concern. The British Medical Association (BMA, 2007), for example, estimate that there are already around 1 million obese children under 16 in England.
