The EU Landfill Directive sets targets that the UK must meet in respect of the diversion of biodegradable municipal waste away from landfill. This paper describes a programme established by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to encourage the development and implementation of new technologies to help achieve these targets. The core of this programme is a series of demonstrator projects; supporting research, education and awareness activities are also summarised
