Electronic monitoring is essential for patient safety in anesthesia. However, formal sources of anesthetic knowledge such as textbooks and instruction manuals deal with monitoring in terms of technical specifications and performance characteristics. Accounts of monitoring design often fail to acknowledge the potential for misunderstanding which monitoring can also bring.
