What lies beneath? Exploring the mechanisms involved in skin breakdown
Irritation and breakdown of the skin are common problems experienced by many individuals with incontinence. However these consequences of incontinence and related care remain a neglected area of research. The range of products available is often confusing and many of our clinical practices have no firm evidence base. This paper aims to explore some of these issues, and demonstrate how a renewed interest in these questions and the use of novel techniques, is developing our knowledge base, and promoting evidence based skin care.

Abstract

Irritation and breakdown of the skin are common problems experienced by many individuals with incontinence. However these consequences of incontinence and related care remain a neglected area of research. The range of products available is often confusing and many of our clinical practices have no firm evidence base. This paper aims to explore some of these issues, and demonstrate how a renewed interest in these questions and the use of novel techniques, is developing our knowledge base, and promoting evidence based skin care.
