SEA 7 Technical report: underwater ambient noise. (Non-technical summary)
This report has been prepared for Geotek Ltd., acting on behalf of the Department of Trade
and Industry as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process for the UK
continental shelf. This non-technical summary is part of the SEA 7 process which covers
the area from the northern Irish coast northwards through western Scottish coastal waters
to Cape Wrath then northwards to 60 degrees north and westwards to 24 degrees west.
This report looks at the sources of underwater noise that combine to provide the
background ambient noise levels in the waters of the SEA 7 area and considers the
mechanisms by which the sound is generated and may then be modified by the
environment. Summary recommendations and conclusions of the technical report are
given.
