Notes and queries. Peintunge and Schadewe in Ancrene Wisse Part 4
The article notes a close parallel in Alan of Lille's 'Summa de Arte Praedicatoria' to the idea in Ancrene Wisse Part 4 that earthly suffering is only like a painting or shadow of the suffering in Purgatory and Hell after death, and argues that the AW author's use of this imagery 'should be linked less with the high theory of Victorine tradition' as argued by G. V. Smithers (Medium Aevum, 34 (1965), 126-8) 'than with a late twelfth- and early thirteenth-century context of practical pastoral writing'.

Abstract

The article notes a close parallel in Alan of Lille's 'Summa de Arte Praedicatoria' to the idea in Ancrene Wisse Part 4 that earthly suffering is only like a painting or shadow of the suffering in Purgatory and Hell after death, and argues that the AW author's use of this imagery 'should be linked less with the high theory of Victorine tradition' as argued by G. V. Smithers (Medium Aevum, 34 (1965), 126-8) 'than with a late twelfth- and early thirteenth-century context of practical pastoral writing'.
