The origins of Ancrene Wisse: new answers, new questions
The article takes as its starting-point Eric Dobson's theory of Victorine authorship (in 'The Origins of Ancrene Wisse', 1976) for the early thirteenth-century Middle English guide for anchoresses, Ancrene Wisse; but argues that both Dobson's own findings and more recent research point more to a Dominican than a Victorine origin.
