Change and continuity: the English sermon before 1250
Change and continuity: the English sermon before 1250
The chapter gives a survey of the English sermon from the Anglo-Saxon period to the mid thirteenth century. For the post-Conquest period, it gives particular attention to the relationship between the older native preaching tradition and newer Continental influences, arguing that earlier scholarship has underestimated the coexistence - and in some cases even the convergence - of the two traditions from the mid twelfth century onwards.
