The book examines the causes and consequences of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent. It critically assesses the existing literature and emphasizes the need to look beyond events in the Punjab and the immediate period of division to fully appreciate the historical significance of partition. Processes of violence and resettlement are analysed and there is a consideration of partition's impact both on Indo-Pakistan relations and state construction in India and Pakistan.
