Trends in European railways over the last two decades
A number of reforms have affected the European rail market over the last two decades and this paper reviews what actual changes have occurred on the ground over this period. Trends in passenger and freight traffic are examined, along with the evolution of the rail network. The increasing role of high-speed rail is particularly highlighted. An attempt is made to determine the extent to which these changes are driven by the reform process or are driven by other factors.
