Developments in european impact and explosions related research
The European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research Programme includes a working group on impact and explosions, providing a forum by which research engineers, working in this field of structural engineering, can meet and exchange ideas.
Comprised of up to 8 members each from the 22 participating EU countries, the Impact and Explosions group is the third of four working groups that constitute the activity regarding Urban Habitat Constructions Under Catastrophic Events.
Ongoing research, conducted by this working group (WG3), covers a broad spectrum of impact and explosion related work, specifically to building and bridge structures, incorporating aspects such as; the performance of structures subject to blast from vehicle borne IED’s; the effects of natural gas explosions; impact on structures from aircraft, mud-slides and other impact events.
The activities of WG3 can be categorized into the following areas:
• Codes and Standards related to robustness
• Vulnerability to progressive collapse due to localised damage from blast or impact
• Quantification of loads related to extreme events
• Protection systems and design methodologies to resist blast and impact
• Experimental testing
This review paper will very briefly summarise the work being carried out by the participating members in these areas. Thus is will provide an overview of some of the impact and explosions related work currently being undertaken in the EU.
