An analysis of the true bending strength of steel beams
An analysis of the true bending strength of steel beams
A series of four-point bending tests on laterally restrained steel beams is reported. The results were used to quantify the degree of conservatism inherent in the plastic moment capacity design method and provide convincing evidence of the need to reduce the g factor applied to this resistance function. R A modification is proposed to the design formula, which improves accuracy and permits the full moment capacity of restrained beams to be utilized.

Abstract
A series of four-point bending tests on laterally restrained steel beams is reported. The results were used to quantify the degree of conservatism inherent in the plastic moment capacity design method and provide convincing evidence of the need to reduce the g factor applied to this resistance function. R A modification is proposed to the design formula, which improves accuracy and permits the full moment capacity of restrained beams to be utilized.
