Optical bistability at 1.54µm in an Er3+-doped single-mode fibre laser

We report the first observation of optical bistability in a rare-earth doped single-mode fibre laser. Hysteresis has been obtained in the lasing characteristic of an Er3+-doped fibre laser operating at 1.54µm using the mechanism of saturable absorption
