Some experimental aspects of propagation in optical fibres
Some experimental aspects of propagation in optical fibres
If a microwave engineer were asked to predict the performance of an overmoded waveguide some 100 wavelengths in diameter, 10 wavelengths long (60cm x 60km at 50GHz) and made by straightforward techniques then he would expect the attenuation to be high and the bandwidth poor. However cladded glass fibres of comparable dimensions are eminently suitable for practical application. The object of this paper is to discuss the various kinds of structure available and the experimental results which have been achieved.

Abstract
If a microwave engineer were asked to predict the performance of an overmoded waveguide some 100 wavelengths in diameter, 10 wavelengths long (60cm x 60km at 50GHz) and made by straightforward techniques then he would expect the attenuation to be high and the bandwidth poor. However cladded glass fibres of comparable dimensions are eminently suitable for practical application. The object of this paper is to discuss the various kinds of structure available and the experimental results which have been achieved.
