Abstract
The article examines official and non-official Pakistani responses to the growing Sikh challenge to the Indian state in the 1980s. It reflects on the legacies of the 1947 partition and colonial stereotypes of the Sikhs. The article argues that Pakistani support and sympathy for Sikh ethno-nationalism was opportunistic in the 1980s. Similarly attempts to use the Sikh dominated East Punjab as a bridge between Pakistan and India in the period of composite dialogue post 2002 were motivated by a similar ad hoc response in Islamabad
