Lessons of Alder Hey: consent must be informed
As the storm was breaking over the wholesale removal of organs from the bodies of dead children without parental consent at Alder Hey, it quickly became apparent that many other hospitals throughout the UK have also developed collections of children’s organs. An audit conducted by the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Liam Donaldson, revealed that hospitals collectively have stored anywhere between 40000 and 50000 organs.
