A report on archaeological geophysical and topographical surveys at Warblington Castle, Hampshire
This report presents the results of geophysical surveys conducted at Warblington Castle. It details the survey method and an interpretation and discussion of the results. The focus of the survey was to provide training for Archaeology students from the Department of Archaeology at The University of Southampton. The survey represented a part of the student’s courses on archaeological survey and geophysics as well as fulfilling their fieldwork requirement as part of their degree courses. The survey techniques used were magnetometer, earth resistance, and ground penetrating Radar survey. The geophysical survey looked to recover features of any date to help put the site geographically and archaeologically in context. A topographic survey was also conducted using a total station. The survey found features that are the foundations of parts of the Tudor house and surrounding complex that no longer exists above ground level. These foundations only exist for the northern half of the original castle area. The topographic survey showed the southern area of the castle, including the foundations, was removed when the castle went out of use and the current house and road access was built on the site. The LiDAR and topographic survey data show possible earthwork remains in the field to the west of the castle.
