Evaluation of different 3D-printed materials for electrical insulation applications

Evaluation of different 3D-printed materials for electrical insulation applications
Evaluation of different 3D-printed materials for electrical insulation applications
This paper investigates the dielectric behaviour of PLA (polylactic acid) printed by FDM and VeroClear printed by PolyJet through DC conductivity, dielectric spectroscopy and AC breakdown testing. VeroClear shows lower conductivity, higher permittivity and stable dipolar losses, reflecting its dense, cross-linked structure. PLA exhibits lower permittivity, low apparent losses and higher effective conductivity due to inter-layer voids and moisture sensitivity. AC breakdown strength values are comparable, although VeroClear exhibits a higher Weibull shape parameter, partly influenced by its thinner geometry. Overall, the dielectric response is strongly governed by both polymer chemistry and printing process.
