Influence of toolpath strategy on the dielectric performance of FDM-printed polypropylene composite material
Influence of toolpath strategy on the dielectric performance of FDM-printed polypropylene composite material
The influence of toolpath strategy on the dielectric performance of fused deposition modeling (FDM) - printed polypropylene was investigated. Three-layer specimens with identical nominal thickness and comparable porosity were fabricated using monotonic, concentric, and spiral deposition paths to isolate the effect of internal interface topology. Frequency-domain dielectric spectroscopy, DC resistivity, and AC breakdown measurements were performed. The spiral configuration exhibited increased low-frequency permittivity, higher dielectric loss, and reduced DC resistivity, indicating enhanced interfacial polarization and interface-assisted transport. Although breakdown strength differences were minor, the monotonic configuration showed improved statistical reliability. The results demonstrate that deposition geometry affects dielectric response beyond total void fraction, suggesting that FDM-printed polymers require interpretation frameworks distinct from conventionally processed bulk materials.

Abstract

The influence of toolpath strategy on the dielectric performance of fused deposition modeling (FDM) - printed polypropylene was investigated. Three-layer specimens with identical nominal thickness and comparable porosity were fabricated using monotonic, concentric, and spiral deposition paths to isolate the effect of internal interface topology. Frequency-domain dielectric spectroscopy, DC resistivity, and AC breakdown measurements were performed. The spiral configuration exhibited increased low-frequency permittivity, higher dielectric loss, and reduced DC resistivity, indicating enhanced interfacial polarization and interface-assisted transport. Although breakdown strength differences were minor, the monotonic configuration showed improved statistical reliability. The results demonstrate that deposition geometry affects dielectric response beyond total void fraction, suggesting that FDM-printed polymers require interpretation frameworks distinct from conventionally processed bulk materials.
