History Wall, Churchill Hospital

History Wall, Churchill Hospital
History Wall, Churchill Hospital
Permanent installation, Churchill Hospital, Oxford,
launched March, 2009
The commission, by Churchill Hospital Trust, was part of a public art programme for its new cancer wing, with works by Liz Rideal, Heinrich and Palmer, and others. It initially involved an extension of my curatorial practice to identify an appropriate collaborator to address its core challenge: how might a given, largely arbitrary collection of press and documentary photography of a site be deployed to impart a coherent sense of history to a new development at the location?
The piece, a run of 95 lenticular panels along a 200m connective corridor in constant use, combines the given documentary material with both artists’ own contemporary photography. Passers-by see images of the modern hospital, while the ghosts of its past softly emerge from the wall and slide into peripheral vision. The piece was a testing ground for the mechanism of Makhoul’s current international touring project Enter Ghost Exit Ghost.

Abstract
