Cultivating the 'aristocracy of the spirit': the Sokol movement in late imperial Russia
This article examines the Sokol movement in late imperial Russia. Focusing on 1909–14, the peak years of activity, it draws on a range of untapped sources to examine how the movement's leaders merged nationalist ideas with a growing public interest in health and physical recreation. The article surveys the domestic development of the Russian Sokol, and then its involvement in the international activities of the movement, particularly after the appearance of the Federation of Slavic Sokols in 1908. It considers the controversial status of Russian nationalism within the movement in an age when Neo-Slavic conceptions of identity were increasingly contested.

Abstract

This article examines the Sokol movement in late imperial Russia. Focusing on 1909–14, the peak years of activity, it draws on a range of untapped sources to examine how the movement's leaders merged nationalist ideas with a growing public interest in health and physical recreation. The article surveys the domestic development of the Russian Sokol, and then its involvement in the international activities of the movement, particularly after the appearance of the Federation of Slavic Sokols in 1908. It considers the controversial status of Russian nationalism within the movement in an age when Neo-Slavic conceptions of identity were increasingly contested.
