Holy Land pilgrimage and geography in fifteenth-century England: understanding and devotion in Cambridge, Corpus Christi College Library MS 426
Argues that Cambridge, Corpus Christi College Library MS 426 (late-fifteenth-century) is a kind of pilgrim's book, in that it enables a kind of virtual or spiritual pilgrimage that converts geographical knowledge and understanding of the Holy Land into devotion. Discusses the adaptations made to certain texts in the volume that have been excerpted from other sources (including geographical sections from Roger Bacon's Opus Maius; excerpts from Mandeville's Travels pertaining to the Holy Land; Bede's De Locis Sanctis). Also discusses two seemingly unique compositions included in and possibly created for the volume: a cosmographical treatise beginning 'Secundum Ptholemeum' that draws on the early fifteenth-century works of Cardinal Pierre d'Ailly, and a map of Jerusalem within the context of the Holy Land.
