Underwater archaeological survey of Nesebar Aquatory

Underwater archaeological survey of Nesebar Aquatory
Underwater archaeological survey of Nesebar Aquatory
In 2018 the Centre for Underwater Archaeology continued the underwater archaeological survey of submerged Mesambria. In the aquatory westwards of the South Jetty Early Byzantine walls of stones and mortar were identified following the 2.5 isobath and crossing almost entire bay Honolulu. Westwards of the jetty the known rectangular tower made of massive blocks was cleaned of seaweeds and recorded. Its size is 8 x 8 m. Eastwards (Fig. 1) and westwards of the tower two massive fortification walls made of big blocks and slabs were recorded. South of this fortification line two artificial structures made of piled stones were identified, probably jetties. They enclosed a basin with size about 50 x 80 m, at 4.5 – 5 m depth. West of it a wall was documented (Fig. 2). North of the peninsula, westwards of the North Jetty, two structures were surveyed. One of them was a lineal
structure, about 60 m long and up to 3 m high, made of massive piled blocks. Next and parallel to it remains of fortification wall in opus mixtum were studied. The small-scale excavations revealed destructions of the wall buried under the sand (Fig. 3).

Abstract

In 2018 the Centre for Underwater Archaeology continued the underwater archaeological survey of submerged Mesambria. In the aquatory westwards of the South Jetty Early Byzantine walls of stones and mortar were identified following the 2.5 isobath and crossing almost entire bay Honolulu. Westwards of the jetty the known rectangular tower made of massive blocks was cleaned of seaweeds and recorded. Its size is 8 x 8 m. South of this fortification line two artificial structures made of piled stones were identified, probably jetties. They enclosed a basin with size about 50 x 80 m, at 4.5 – 5 m depth.
