Petroleum development and agricultural change in the north-Orinoco region of Venezuela

Petroleum development and agricultural change in the north-Orinoco region of Venezuela
Petroleum development and agricultural change in the north-Orinoco region of Venezuela

The thesis identifies and examines the spatial and economic effects arising from the interaction between petroleum and agricultural development. The analysis has required an integrated methodological framework and takes account primarily of the development issues in relation to petroleum production, focusing on its effects upon agriculture in a broader context

Secondly, the thesis underlines changes in the agricultural space economy, farming structure and the management of agriculture in the North Orinoco region of Venezeula. The basis of the research is a sample survey of farmers in communities selected within a 20-Km radius from the oil-industrial sites. Similarly, a series of interviews with officials from the different governmental and development agencies involved in the region's policy-making was undertaken.

The study demonstrates intra-regional variations among the three different states that comprise the region in terms of land- use patterns, agricultural outputs and sales, farm occupancy and agricultural land values. These changes are in most cases associataed with the development of the oil-industrial economy. Furthermore, the research reveals intra-regional disparities in the pattern of government financial support to agriculture and a limited contribution of the petroleum industry to the management of the region's agricultural space economy. The study of the petroleum-agriculture interface has suggested issues for further research.
